COACHES QUESTIONNAIRE
[In lieu of a Questionnaire, Coach Cotle instead submitted a letter]
Life is a series of experiences, some good and some not so good. If you want to have these experiences, try starting a football team. When Donald Groh and I revived the football team at Wheelersburg High School, there was no equipment of any kind, there was no practice field, no schedule, and no boys who had ever played the game. We had to teach from the ground up and hope the boys would learn enough to do a fairly reputable job. I think they did – and against some very tough ball teams who showed no mercy on a young, inexperienced squad.
It was too bad that some of the squad members had such limited playing time. There were a few who were quick learners, really took to the game, and with a little more experience would have made excellent players. One of them did – Eddie miller.
You wanted to know which losses hurt the most. The answer is – all of them. We had some close games that could have gone either way with a little luck. I was sorry for the players because we did not win more because they did work hard and put forth tremendous effort. At the time, I was teaching the basic fundamentals of football, not coaching experienced players. The coaching started later on with the younger boys coming on after they were acquainted with the game.
I truly enjoyed coaching and thought long and hard before giving it up.
